In 1965, Congress established a trio of programs to ensure
educational opportunity for all Americans, regardless of race,
ethnic background, or economic circumstances. For more than
30 years, these TRIO programs have assisted
students from low-income families, in which neither parent
graduated from college, to prepare for higher education, gain
admittance to college, and earn a baccalaureate degree. Since
1965, new programs targeted to help disadvantaged students
progress from middle school to graduate school have been added
and all have been expanded and improved to provide a wider
range of services. It is estimated that more than two million
students have been assisted by TRIO programs and have moved
on to participate more fully in America’s economic and
social life.
As one of the seven TRIO programs that now
exist, Upward Bound Math/Science is federally funded through
the U.S. Department of Education to provide assistance and
guidance to high school students interested in degrees and
careers in the math and science fields. We provide the opportunity
to learn what it takes to be an excellent student and to serve
as a guiding hand/presence in the college application process.
The Upward Bound Math/Science (UBMS) program
at the University of Delaware combines academics with systematic
academic support, general counseling
and cultural enrichment experiences through its summer residential
programs and academic year experiences. We are committed to
developing a community of support that will encourage our
students to reach for and realize their potential as students
and members of the larger society.
Our program has been assisting low income
& first generation students achieve their goal of higher
education since its beginning in 1992. There are two major
components of the UBMS program: a summer residential program
and academic-year programming. For five to six weeks in the summer,
students take intensive classes in math, science, English
and Latin, attend nightly study sessions with tutors, and
live on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus with
college students who serve in the dual roles of Resident Assistant
and Tutor. During the academic year, UBMS offers monthly workshops
on careers, majors, financial aid, study skills and college
tours.
