As you make decisions regarding your college education, we understand that you want to know as much as possible about the services provided for students with disabilities. Here at UD's Academic Enrichment Center, our focus is on assisting all UD students as they take on more personal responsibility for their learning, developing an effective resource base in order to truly direct their own educational path. Provision of services for students with disabilities is no longer guided by the IDEA, which requires maximizing grade K-12 student performance. Instead, colleges and universities are mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other legislation to "level the playing field" for students with disabilities.
For a comparison of the differences between disabilities services and accommodations in high school and in college, click here . Upon your matriculation to the University, you will need to submit your documentation to the Documentation Review Committee (DRC)
if you are requesting accommodations. Please review The Process for more information.
I will be visiting the University and would like to meet with someone about the services I can receive if I decide to attend the University of Delaware. What can I expect at that meeting?
You (with your parents, if you wish) may make a half-hour appointment with one of our staff members by calling our office at 831-2805. At that meeting, we can provide an overview of AEC services for all UD students, along with general information about accommodations provided for students who have been determined eligible to receive them. Because eligibility decisions are made by the DRC, a University-wide committee, we will NOT be able to review your documentation at that time. The DRC will review documentation only after the student has made the commitment to matriculate to UD.
I have just sent in my deposit confirming that I will matriculate to UD. How do I go forward in requesting accommodations?
At this point, you are welcome to send in your documentation for review (see The Process and Guidelines, as noted elsewhere). You are not required at this point to schedule a meeting, but if you wish to do so, you may make a one-hour intake appointment with one of our staff members by calling our office at 831-2805 (please complete the AEC Intake and Request for Accommodations forms to bring with you). We also welcome you to attend our presentation at your DelaWorld orientation session prior to beginning your career at UD.
